The rule that makes every Kashmir itinerary work
Base yourself in Srinagar and treat each valley as a return day trip. Gulmarg is 50 km (about 1.5 hours), Pahalgam is 90 km (2 to 2.5 hours), and Sonmarg is 80 km (2 to 2.5 hours in season, longer when Zojila traffic backs up). None of these roads are fast, and all of them are prettier by daylight. Shifting hotels every night to 'save driving' costs you more time in check-ins and packing than it saves on the road, and it means you sleep in three mediocre properties instead of one good one.
3-night Kashmir itinerary (short break)
Day 1: land at Srinagar, shikara ride on Dal Lake, houseboat night. Day 2: Gulmarg — Gondola Phase 1, snow point in winter or the meadow walk in summer, back by evening. Day 3: Pahalgam — Betaab Valley, Chandanwari and Aru Valley by local union taxi. Day 4: Mughal Gardens and Shankaracharya en route to the airport. This works if your flights are early in and late out. Sonmarg does not fit — skip it rather than stacking it onto the Gulmarg day.
5-night Kashmir itinerary (the one we recommend)
Day 1: Srinagar arrival, Dal Lake shikara, houseboat. Day 2: Gulmarg full day with both Gondola phases if weather allows. Day 3: Pahalgam with Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari. Day 4: Sonmarg and Thajiwas Glacier (pony or short trek). Day 5: Srinagar city — Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi, Hazratbal, Old City and the handicraft markets. Day 6: departure. This is the itinerary that leaves you rested rather than relieved, and it absorbs one bad-weather day without breaking.
7-night Kashmir itinerary (unhurried)
Take the 5-night plan and insert two things: a Doodhpathri or Yusmarg day (both are quieter meadow drives about 2 hours from Srinagar and dramatically less crowded than Gulmarg), and a genuinely slow day on the lake — late breakfast on the houseboat, Nigeen Lake, the floating vegetable market at dawn if you can wake for it. Travellers with more time can instead extend towards Kargil and Leh, but that needs an extra 4–5 days and is a different trip.
Season notes that change your plan
December to February: Gulmarg is the highlight, but the Srinagar–Tangmarg road can need chains after fresh snow and Sonmarg is often closed. March to April: tulip garden opens late March for roughly three weeks; book Srinagar city day around it. May to June: everything is open, Sonmarg at its best, peak crowds. July to August: green and warm, occasional rain, cheapest rates. September to November: autumn Chinars, clear skies, Sonmarg closes towards late November.

Vaishno Devi adds 2 nights via Katra and pairs well with a Jammu arrival or departure. Leh adds 4 to 5 nights over the Zojila and Fotu La passes and is only possible roughly from June to September.
