Where the helicopter flies from and to
Flights operate between the Katra helipad, roughly 2 km from the Katra bus stand, and the Sanjichhat helipad at about 6,200 feet. Sanjichhat sits above the main Bhawan complex, so after landing you still cover roughly 2.5 km downhill — on foot in 35–45 minutes, by battery car, or by palki. On the return, the same 2.5 km is uphill, so most pilgrims take the battery car back to Sanjichhat and allow extra time before their return slot.
How official booking actually works
Tickets are issued only through the Shrine Board's own online system on maavaishnodevi.org. You register with a mobile number and email, choose the route — Katra–Sanjichhat, Sanjichhat–Katra, Same Day Return (SDR) or Next Day Return (NDR) — pick the operator slot, enter every pilgrim's name and government photo ID, and pay online. Booking is required for anyone aged 2 and above; infants below 2 fly free on a lap and are declared separately. Once a booking is completed, the service date and pilgrim details cannot be changed, so check the spelling and the date before you pay. Slots are consumed within minutes on weekends, Navratri and festival dates, and a small current-day counter quota at Katra should never be your only plan. No travel agency — including us — can issue, hold or guarantee a helicopter ticket; anyone claiming otherwise is reselling at a markup or worse.

Long-sector charters between Jammu and the Bhawan are priced separately and run to roughly ₹35,000 for a same-day return and ₹60,000 for a next-day return for the whole aircraft. The fare covers only the flight sector booked — the battery car between Sanjichhat and the Bhawan, palki or pony, cloakroom charges, the Bhairon Temple ropeway and any Katra hotel or taxi cost are all separate. Rules, ID, RFID and weight limits
Two documents matter, and they are different things. The helicopter ticket is one; the free RFID Yatra Access Card is the other, and it is compulsory for every pilgrim regardless of how you reach the Bhawan. Register at the Yatri Registration Counter near the Katra Bus Stand — or online, in which case you must still collect the physical RFID card before starting — where each yatri is photographed on the spot and issued the card that is scanned at the Banganga check post about 1.5 km away. Registration is free, fully computerised, and issued only by the Shrine Board; no private agency is authorised to do it.
