Gulmarg receives an average of 4-6 feet of cumulative snowfall from December to February, creating world-class skiing conditions. The Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 takes you to Apharwat Peak (3,950m) for expert runs through pristine powder. Beginner slopes near Kongdoori offer gentle terrain for learning. Snowboarding, snow tubing, and snowshoeing are also available. The skiing season runs from mid-December to mid-March. Equipment rental costs ₹1,500-2,500/day.
Frozen Dal Lake & Srinagar in Snow
When temperatures drop below -5°C in January (Chillai Kalan), parts of Dal Lake freeze — a rare and stunning sight. Snow-covered Mughal Gardens with frozen fountains create ethereal photo opportunities. The Boulevard along Dal Lake looks dreamlike under fresh snowfall. Shikara rides on unfrozen parts of the lake during light snowfall are an otherworldly experience. Snow-covered houseboats are a unique sight found nowhere else in the world.
What to Pack for Winter Kashmir
Essential items: Thermal inner wear (top and bottom), heavy down jacket or puffer, waterproof outer layer, woollen caps and gloves, snow boots with grip, woollen socks (multiple pairs), sunglasses (snow glare), moisturiser and lip balm (cold can be very drying), hand warmers (optional but helpful).
