Every summer, thousands of yatris start their Amarnath pilgrimage from either Baltal (Sonmarg side, shorter 14 km trek) or Pahalgam-Chandanwari (longer 32 km trek). This 2026 fare guide covers Srinagar-to-basecamp taxi rates, driver waiting rules during the yatra, and the permit paperwork the Shrine Board checks at Domail and Chandanwari.

Two Base Camps — Which Route to Choose

Baltal (via Sonmarg, ~95 km from Srinagar) is the short-trek option — one-day to-and-from is possible for the fit yatri. Pahalgam-Chandanwari (~112 km) is the traditional 3-5 day trek route via Sheshnag and Panchtarni. Your Srinagar taxi drops at one and picks up at the other if you're doing the crossover route (Baltal up, Pahalgam down or vice-versa). Both roads are open only during the official yatra window (typically July-August).

Srinagar to Baltal Taxi — Same-Day & Overnight Rates

Baltal is 3-3.5 hours from Srinagar via NH-1 (Srinagar → Sonmarg → Baltal). Same-day return is possible but tiring — most yatris start at 3-4 am, trek up-down, and return by 7 pm. Overnight-halt rates include driver food and lodging near Baltal langar area. Vehicles cannot enter beyond Baltal Domail base; from there it's the trek, palki or pony leg.

Srinagar to Pahalgam-Chandanwari Taxi

Chandanwari is 16 km beyond Pahalgam (total ~112 km from Srinagar). Outside taxis reach Pahalgam only — from there, Pahalgam-union taxis do the Chandanwari drop (fixed union rate). If you're doing the longer trek route, book Srinagar → Pahalgam one-way, spend a night at Pahalgam, then take the local taxi to Chandanwari before dawn.

Yatra Permit, Registration & RFID Card

The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) issues a mandatory Yatra Permit / RFID card. Register online at jkyatri.jk.gov.in with a Compulsory Health Certificate from an SASB-authorised doctor. Permits are day-slot specific — carry the printout and health form; both are checked at Domail (Baltal) and Chandanwari gates. Our drivers know the current SASB rules and can guide first-timers on paperwork.

Safety, Weather & What to Pack

Weather changes fast on the Amarnath route — carry a windproof jacket, raincoat, gloves, glucose, dry fruits, torch and a good trekking stick. Altitude sickness is real above Panjtarni (3,850 m): stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and never trek in flip-flops. Choose the Baltal route if you have any knee, heart or breathing concerns; it's shorter and steeper but done in a day.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Amarnath yatra open in 2026?

The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board officially announces dates each year (typically 45-60 days between late June and mid-August). Book your taxi and permit only after the SASB notification is out.

Baltal or Pahalgam — which route should first-timers take?

Baltal (Sonmarg side) is shorter — 14 km one-way — and feasible in a single long day. Pahalgam route is longer, 32 km with camps at Sheshnag and Panchtarni, better for those who want the traditional pilgrimage experience.

Can my Srinagar taxi wait at Baltal until I return?

Yes. Same-day round-trip bookings include full driver waiting at Baltal Domail while you trek. Long overnight halts (Pahalgam trek) are billed on a per-day halt rate.

Do I need a Compulsory Health Certificate?

Yes. The Shrine Board requires a CHC from an authorised doctor. Get it before the yatra dates — SASB list of authorised doctors is published on jkyatri.jk.gov.in.

Is helicopter service available from Baltal to Panjtarni?

Yes, government-approved operators run Baltal-Panjtarni and Pahalgam-Panjtarni helicopter services. Book online on the SASB portal; your taxi drops you at the helipad.
