Sonmarg – The Gateway to Ladakh

Sonmarg, meaning 'Meadow of Gold', sits at 2,800 metres altitude on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, 80 km northeast of Srinagar. It's the last major stop in Kashmir before the highway climbs over Zoji La Pass into Ladakh. Surrounded by glaciers, alpine lakes, and snow-capped peaks, Sonmarg offers a raw, untouched beauty that's different from the manicured charm of Srinagar or Gulmarg.

Thajiwas Glacier – A Trek for Everyone

The Thajiwas Glacier is Sonmarg's star attraction — a 3 km trek from the town centre through meadows and pine forests. The glacier retains snow even in summer, making it one of the few places in India where you can play in snow in July. Pony rides to the glacier cost ₹800-1,200 return. The trek is easy-to-moderate and suitable for families with children. Snow sledging is available near the glacier base (₹200-400 per ride). Best visited between May and October.

Zero Point (Zoji La) – Where Roads End

Zero Point at Zoji La Pass (3,528m) is the boundary between Kashmir and Ladakh. Accessible from June to October, the drive from Sonmarg takes about 1 hour on a rough road. The views are breathtaking — endless snow fields, rugged mountains, and a sense of being on the edge of the world. A taxi to Zero Point costs ₹3,000-4,000 return from Sonmarg. The road is unpaved and adventurous — not recommended for those with motion sickness.

Lakes & Treks Around Sonmarg

Vishansar Lake (4,084m) is a stunning alpine lake reached via a 2-day trek — one of Kashmir's most beautiful high-altitude lakes. Krishansar Lake (3,801m) is a twin lake nearby. Gadsar Lake and the Nichnai Pass route form part of the famous Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. For easier excursions, the Nilagrad River (7 km from Sonmarg) has a natural stream with reddish water from iron deposits.

Practical Tips for Visiting Sonmarg

Sonmarg has limited accommodation compared to Srinagar or Gulmarg — mostly tented camps and a few hotels. Book in advance during June-August peak season. The town shuts down in winter (November-April) as heavy snow blocks access. There are no ATMs in Sonmarg, so carry sufficient cash. A day trip from Srinagar is feasible (3 hours each way) but staying overnight in a camp is a memorable experience.
