Pahalgam – The Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam, at 2,130 metres, is one of Kashmir's most charming destinations. Located 95 km from Srinagar at the confluence of the Lidder River and Sheshnag stream, it's known as the 'Valley of Shepherds'. Once a quiet pastoral village, Pahalgam gained fame as a Bollywood filming location and as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Today it's Kashmir's adventure capital with trekking, horse riding, river rafting, and stunning valley excursions.

Betaab Valley – Bollywood's Favourite Location

Named after the 1983 Bollywood film 'Betaab' starring Sunny Deol, this valley is 15 km from Pahalgam. The lush green meadows surrounded by dense deodar forests and snow-capped peaks make it a photographer's paradise. Entry fee is ₹100. The valley has been a filming location for several Hindi movies. A pony ride from Pahalgam costs ₹800-1,200 return, or you can drive (₹500 taxi). The best time to visit is April–October when the meadows are in full bloom.

Aru Valley – Trekking Paradise

Aru Valley, 12 km from Pahalgam, is the starting point for several famous treks including Tarsar-Marsar Lake, Kolahoi Glacier, and the Great Lakes Trek. Even non-trekkers can enjoy the gentle meadows, wooden huts, and flowing streams. In winter, Aru gets snow and offers a quieter alternative to Gulmarg. Horse riding to Aru costs ₹700-1,000. The drive from Pahalgam takes 30 minutes on a scenic road along the Lidder River.

Chandanwari & Amarnath Yatra Base

Chandanwari (16 km from Pahalgam, 2,895m) is the traditional starting point of the Amarnath Yatra. Even outside the Yatra season, it's worth visiting for snow sledging (available almost year-round due to the altitude) and scenic pony rides. The road to Chandanwari follows the Lidder River through pine forests. A taxi from Pahalgam costs ₹1,000-1,500 return.

Adventure Activities in Pahalgam

White water rafting on the Lidder River (Grade II-III rapids) runs from May to September, costing ₹1,000-1,500 for a 2-hour session. Horse riding is Pahalgam's most popular activity — rides to Baisaran (Mini Switzerland), Betaab Valley, and Chandanwari range from ₹500-1,500. Fishing for brown and rainbow trout in the Lidder River requires a permit (available locally). The Pahalgam Club offers a 9-hole golf course with stunning valley views.
