Why Kashmir taxis work differently from the rest of India

<p>Three things every visitor should know before booking:</p><ol><li><strong>Ola and Uber don't operate in Kashmir.</strong> There is no ride-hailing app equivalent. The <strong>Kashmir Taxi Stakeholders' Coordination Committee (KTSCC)</strong> — a union of local operators — sets standardised rates for all commercial passenger vehicles.</li><li><strong>Local union taxis have territorial rights.</strong> At Pahalgam, Gulmarg parking, Sonmarg gateway, and other tourist points, your Srinagar-based taxi must hand you over to a local union vehicle for sightseeing within that zone. This is enforced.</li><li><strong>Non-Kashmir number plates face restrictions.</strong> Cars registered outside JK01/JK02 (Kashmir Division) can be turned back or fined at Pahalgam and Gulmarg. Book a Kashmir-registered vehicle.</li></ol>

Winter taxi essentials (Nov to March)

<p>Kashmir winters change everything about local transport. Key points:</p><ul><li><strong>Snow chains are mandatory</strong> on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg stretch after fresh snow. Chains cost ₹800–₹1,200/day for the Gulmarg segment; some drivers include, some don't — ask.</li><li><strong>Sonmarg road (NH-1 beyond Kangan)</strong> is closed for civilian traffic early November to late April. Zoji La to Ladakh closes even earlier. Plan around it.</li><li><strong>SUV strongly preferred</strong> over sedan for Gulmarg trips in Jan–Feb. A Dzire will make it up on cleared days but not after fresh snowfall.</li><li><strong>Fog delays at SXR airport</strong> are routine in Dec–Feb, especially early morning departures. Leave for airport 3 hours ahead.</li><li><strong>Driver bata (winter surcharge)</strong> of ₹300–₹500/day is applied for high-altitude drives during peak snow — factor it into your quote.</li></ul>

Self-drive vs chauffeur — which is right for you?

<p><strong>Self-drive is legal but rarely recommended</strong>, for four reasons:</p><ol><li>Union rules block outside-Kashmir vehicles at Pahalgam and Gulmarg — you'll rent a local taxi anyway at each town, so self-drive saves nothing.</li><li>Google Maps routes in Kashmir are often 5+ years out of date. Local drivers know current road status live.</li><li>Snow-chain fitting and winter driving on mountain roads is a real skill — not something to learn on the Gulmarg switchbacks.</li><li>Insurance and roadside assistance networks are patchy outside Srinagar city.</li></ol><p><strong>Chauffeur (recommended):</strong> ₹2,500–₹4,500 per day extra beyond the vehicle cost, includes local knowledge, weather-aware routing, and haggling on your behalf at pony stands and pashmina shops.</p>

Tempo Traveller — for groups of 8+

<p>For families of 8+, corporate groups, wedding entourages or friends trips, a Tempo Traveller is more comfortable than 2 sedans and comparable in cost. Available in 12, 17 and 20-seater configurations.</p><ul><li><strong>12-seater TT (Force Traveller):</strong> Actually seats 9–10 with luggage comfortably. ₹6,000–₹7,500/day.</li><li><strong>17-seater TT:</strong> Seats 13–14 with luggage. ₹7,500–₹9,000/day.</li><li><strong>Urbania premium 12–15 seater:</strong> Reclining seats, USB charging, AC. ₹9,500–₹12,000/day. Best for corporate.</li></ul><p>Tempo Travellers don't fit on the narrow Pahalgam local sightseeing routes — you'll switch to smaller union vehicles for Aru/Betaab/Chandanwari. Same for Sonmarg last-4-km stretches.</p>

How to actually book — 3 options

Convenient for a single-day trip; expect a 15–25% markup over booking direct.</li></ol><p><strong>What to avoid:</strong> Unmarked taxis outside SXR arrivals (union enforcers now clear these regularly, but not always). Anyone quoting significantly below union rates — corners are being cut somewhere.</p>
